Debut for princess’s movie

A film starring Princess Ubolratana as the lead character, Where the Miracle Happens, was to make its debut at the Cannes film festival last night. Before the film screened, the Princess was to talk to the international media about the movie, which was adapted from her book, at the Carlton hotel.

The Carlton is the ritziest establishment on Cannes’ beachfront boulevard and is frequented by Hollywood superstars.

The press conference was to be followed by a gala reception with the Princess as the guest of honour.

The film, which featured a businesswoman who goes to work with children in a rural area, is not part of the Cannes film festival, however.

Its screening was supported by the Department of Export Promotion under the Ministry of Commerce.

It will open in Thailand in the second week of August.

Kulanee Iddisai, the deputy chief of the Department of Export Promotion, said Where the Miracle Happens was finished in time to screen at the festival, and the Princess was an ambassador for Thai films.

The department has rented space in the Film Market, a vast trade exhibition that is the business side of the glamorous Cannes film festival, and Thai film producers can use the space to do business with foreign buyers.

Ms Kulanee said the department has been promoting Thai movies for three years, and added that the entertainment industry brings in a large amount of money to Thailand.

The department plans to host the Thailand Entertainment Expo at Paragon Hall on Sept 24 this year.

It will be a trade exhibition combining movies, music and animation aimed at attracting international buyers.

The Ministry of Culture will hold another reception at a Thai pavilion on the beach at Cannes. Culture Minister Anusorn Wongwan will attend the event.
